Kintsugi Healing
18"x24"
Acrylic on Canvas
In this painting, I was inspired by the Japanese practice of kintsugi, the art of mending broken pottery with gold. In the spirit of bringing new meaning and life to things that are old and broken, I painted over an older artwork that no longer represents me as an artist, allowing some of its cracks and layers to show through as part of the canvas’s history. In the painting I depict a “kintsugi” heart, pieced back together with hands representing a community of support. Gold shines through the cracks representing the resilience and hope that comes with repairing those breaks to become stronger. Rather than focusing on the brokenness, the work emphasizes the beauty and strength found in the process of healing.
